(I'm only explicitly listing Makoto because this starts with them.)
Ami hated shopping. She even hated shopping with the girls - though she hated it less. She hated trying on clothes. She hated the girls fussing over her when she tried something on, hated the argument about whether an outfit was too revealing. Even when it was just her, she hated trying to figure out if something looked good on her or not. Ami hated shopping.
So it was not surprising that she had let the New Year's Eve Party sneak up on her. She did not have a dress which was appropriate for the White Tie gala that Usagi was throwing, and she knew it was far too late to have a dress made - plus she would hate that more than just trying dresses on off the rack as that was a lot of fussing over her!
She had talked to Makoto, and the two had agreed that they needed to go shopping. So it was that Ami found herself on the way to the shop with one of her dearest friends - and one of the one's least likely to convince her to buy something that would have her blushing for the entire ball.
She grinned over to her friend, "I need to suggest to Usagi that our uniforms are formal enough in the future." Yes, the skirt was short, but it was a uniform and in her Senshi form she felt more confident, able to deal with it.

Makoto had spent weeks planning the menu for the big New Year’s Eve gala. What she’d neglected to take into consideration was that she would not actually be spending this occasion in the kitchen (other than in the case of an emergency) and would need proper attire for socializing with the guests. Despite the fact that they’d had several state dinners and balls since the formation of ‘Crystal Tokyo’, her formal wardrobe was incredibly lacking. Fortunately Ami was in the same predicament, so it only made sense that they head out on a quick shopping excursion. Her biggest worry: finding something that would appropriately fit her tall, curvy frame.
She chuckled as she looked over at Ami. “You’ll wear your short-skirted Senshi uniform, but you scoff at the idea of a floor-length formal gown?”

Ami shrugged a bit, "The whole world has seen us in them at this point and we've been wearing some version of them since we were 14... I've gotten used to it." Her eyes were laughing as she answered.
She sighed, "I'm not even sure where to go..." Ami had never been good at this kind of thing. "I almost miss the days when we saved the world and nobody knew who we were, or even that we were saving the world." She was pretty sure that she was not the only one that felt that way. "Wasn't there a time when we actually looked forward to all this...?" She gestured indicating Crystal Tokyo in general.

Makoto’s chuckle turned into a hearty laugh. “You may be comfortable with it, but it is winter now and I would be more than happy to show a little less leg for once.”
She nodded along with Ami. “I completely understand you. It hasn’t been an easy transition for any of us, I think. But we’re here now and we’ve got to play the cards we’ve been dealt. No folding out now.” She pointed across the street to a boutique with a rather fancy sign out front. “Why don’t we try over there first? I’ve heard good things about their formal selection.”

Ami nodded, "I know... it would just be easier, none of this worrying about what to wear." She smiled with a slight chuckle, "Or maybe I just am not the kind of woman to be able to appropriately appreciate it."
She looked to the boutique that Makoto indicated, "Looks like as good a place as any."
As they headed over the boutique Ami smiled a bit nodding at the comment of not folding out. "I don't think any of us would even consider that. We just need to make sure that we keep each other sane through it all." Though after yesterday and the meeting with Zoisite last night, she could not help but wonder how any of them would deal with the new development.

“Remaining sane would be a very good thing. Especially after…well, you know.” Makoto slightly frowned as she recalled the events of the past few days.
She shook her head, letting the sad thoughts scatter. “No, I’m not even going to get into that now. We’re here to shop and have a good time.” Opening the door for her friend she curtseyed and made an elaborate gesture with her free arm to signal Ami to enter the shop. “Ladies first!” She couldn’t help but giggle. They were going to have fun today, and that was that.

Ami reached over and gently squeezed Makoto's hand. It was obvious to her that she did not know everything about whatever had happened between Makoto and Nathaniel, but she knew that this was not easy on any of them.
Ami rolled her eyes a bit at Makoto's comment, "Even after all this time, 'shop' and 'have a good time' don't go together for me." She grinned, "But spending time with a friend does." And then she laughed as Makoto made her gesture, just shaking her head as she waited for her once she entered.
"Oh gods..." She looked around the boutique. It was cute store, but it was still overwhelming, and the few mannequins with dresses on them were definitely wearing cuts that were much too plunging for Ami. She looked back at Makoto, a blush on her cheeks and panic in her eyes. "I hate this part..."

Makoto let out another hearty laugh. “You’re just lucky you’re with me and not Minako.”
Stepping into the store, Makoto felt a bit overwhelmed herself. She liked to dress up and feel pretty now and again, but formal events always made her feel out of place. She gave a slight sigh and cringed along with Ami upon seeing the petite mannequins with rather low-cut flashy gowns. “I am so with you on that one…” This was going to be a very long day, she could just feel it. She sighed again as she stepped toward one of the racks. “Well, we may as well get this over with.”

Ami groaned slightly at the mention of Minako. She loved all of her sisters dearly, but shopping with Minako was something that was to be endured.
"I think next time, we should deal with being poked and have gowns made... surely Minako or Rei can point us in the direction of a tasteful designer?"
Ami shook her head and followed Makoto's lead, looking through dresses randomly, having no real idea of what she was looking for. She chuckled as she looked over to Makoto, "Admittedly, if Minako was here she'd take care of this part... I think she has some kind of radar..."

“That would have been a fantastic idea a few weeks ago. Next time, Ami-chan, remind me to get my butt out of the kitchen and into a tailor’s shop.” Makoto gave her friend a wink.
“Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope…” She ticked off the dresses one by one as she flipped through the rack. Looking over at Ami, she chuckled again. “Minako definitely has a keen eye for these sorts of things. The question is, would we actually wear what she picked out?”
Disappointed with the selection on the first rack, she moved to the second. They definitely had a lot of beautiful gowns, just none that would suit Makoto. Flipping through dress after dress again, she called over to her sister. “Any luck over there?”

Ami chuckled, "If you drag me out of the hospital." She smiled to her friend, "Maybe we should talk to Usagi about hiring someone full time to take care of these kinds of things..."
She frowned as she passed dresses that were beautiful but that she would never wear. "Sometimes..." She grinned at her memories of shopping trips with Minako. "Not everything she's ever tried to get me into was scandalous."
"I don't even know what I'm looking for or even at, Makoto." She shook her head. "It's a good thing that this was never a class..."

Makoto laughed at Ami’s remark. “There is no hope for us!” Then she nodded at the suggestion of hiring a full-time seamstress. “That’s a really good idea. We’ll definitely need to talk to her about that.”
Still finding nothing on the rack, she decided maybe they should try a shop that was less…flashy. “Wanna try another place? These dresses are beautiful, but they’re just not my style. Maybe we could find somewhere with a few less sequins…”

Ami took one last look at the dresses on the rack and then nodded, "Yeah... I think that's a great idea. This is definitely flashier than I want to be..."
She laughed and stepped back from the racks, "Would it offend Usagi too much if we skipped out?" Ami knew the answer to that question. She could also imagine just how the media would run with that... so she shook her head, "Never mind. Forget I asked."
She started to head towards the door, "Any idea where to try to next... " She frowned, "I'm sorry, Mako-chan. I'm really not very helpful with this..."

Makoto raised an eyebrow at Ami’s suggestion of skipping the event, but laughed when she retracted. “Don’t worry, Ami-chan. I’ve got half a mind to just stay in the kitchen where I fit in, but I know that’s just asking for trouble.”
Leaving the shop, she pondered where to go next. “Maybe we should try one of the larger department stores? They may have some dresses that are more…tasteful? There’s a pretty nice one a few blocks up.”

Ami smiled, glad she wasn't the only one wary of the gala. Well, with any luck she stay out of the way of the media and not attract too much attention and just enjoy the time with her friends - if that would be possible with so many others. Or perhaps she could use the networking possibilities to either get donations for the hospital or encourage similar ones in other places.
She nodded, "That sounds fine. Hopefully we won't cause too much of a scandal by buying dresses from a department store." Ami winked to Makoto, a bit if a giggle in her voice as she thought about those kinds of concerns. "Who knows, maybe not wearing some big name designer will actually encourage the tabloids to stay away from us?"
