Character Info:
Name:
Shitennou: Nephrite
Earth: Nathaniel Bernhardt (I absolutely refuse to use Maxfield Stanton because that name is just WAY too soap opera)
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Rank/Title: Second in Command Shittenou/Royal Guard for Prince Endymion(Mamoru)
Place of Origin:
Present: As far as he can remember, St. Anne's Child's Home in Bronx, New York
Current Home Location: Tokyo, Japan
Preferred Earth Age: Middle Earth. Even contemplating the other ages of Earth makes his head and heart ache with half-realized emotions and amorphous memories.
Occupation: male model/astronomer/astrologer
Family:
Parents:
Father: Leon Bernhardt (deceased)
Mother: Sarah Bernhardt (deceased)
Mentor/Guardian: Carol Starshine (deceased)
Appearance: (Yeah, I'm hot)
Personality:
Nephrite/Nathaniel comes off as the stereotypical bad boy at first, and even the second glance. He flirts and smiles and chases after girls. He parties and drinks and plays the part of the young socialite, trying to network and make a name for himself with the Big Boys. He's vain, proud, and has a volatile temper. He's also known as more than a bit of a rebellious troublemaker who just can't seem to fully cooperate with anyone.
All of those things are true, but Nephrite also has a much deeper internal nature. He's deeply into metaphysics and relies a great deal on astrology to direct his path. This lends him an air of mystery as he always looks like he knows something that you don't. This is generally true about him, as he has access to a great deal of information via star charts. He relies on the stars to help him see clearly as his own emotions often get in the way.
He can be very manipulative and treacherous; to him the end justifies the means. This is just part of his coldly practical side that does what needs to be done. He never acts without a reason or a particular goal in mind, and will do as much of the necessary work behind the scenes as possible, acting overtly only in the final clinching moments.
If you have his loyalty, you have it unquestioningly even if his actions appear treacherous and disobedient. Crossing lines and breaking rules is always done for the ultimate attainment of his goal, whatever it be bedding a particular girl, landing a good contract, or finding the thing he's been searching for his entire life.
History:
Nathaniel's parents died in an automobile accident when he was too young to remember them. Being just slightly too old for the typical family looking to adopt infants and toddlers, the boy ended up spending the majority of his youth in a state run children's home.
Bright, dynamic, and good looking he was often both the joy and bane of his teachers' existences. He had a knack for stirring up mischief and securing "contraband" that greatly endeared him to the other boys resulting in him becoming a sort of unofficial leader amongst them.
Being as intelligent and lauded by his peers as he was, Nathaniel always seemed to have some sort of problem with authority figures. He always wanted to be able to do things his own way, and those ways all too often did not coincide with the way those in charge wanted them done. Because of this, he was constantly getting into trouble and being reprimanded. It wasn't that he actively sought to cause trouble, he just couldn't bring himself to bend to authority when he felt that there was another, better way to do things. Eventually this grew to be too much for much for him, and Nathaniel ran away. He was fourteen at the time.
Three years on the streets went by rather quickly. Living was now an actual event for him, rather than an unending chain of disciplinary actions to be endured. All of his skills and intelligence were being put to active use with various forms of panhandling and hustling, and he loved every minute of it.
Nathaniel could have happily spent the rest of his life this way. He was free to do as he pleased, was well regarded amongst his peers, had a growing street business of his own, and he could camp out on any damn roof he pleased. (Climbing onto the home's roof to look at the stars a.k.a. curfew violation, had been his most common violation.) Here in the heart of the city though, he had power, freedom, and growing wealth but the stars were harder to see.
The constant nagging of that thought materialized before him one day in the form of an older woman named Carol Starshine. In need of cash, he had tried to fleece her out of hers and his usually glib speech came to a stammering halt when she fixed him with the clearest, most straightforward stare he'd ever encountered. She then proceeded to tell him that he was wasting his talents, and "come with me young man, and I'll show you what life is really about."
He was, of course, initially suspicious but that voice of unerring instinct that resided in inside of him urged him to go with her. Instinct had never steered him wrong so Nathaniel went with Carol to Arizona, leaving behind his ganglife of petty crime to learn "what life was really about."
Along the way Carol told him what she saw hovering over his head, about dreams and visions and a karmic debt. She told him about things that he had never breathed a word of to anyone else in his life for fear of sounding completely crazy. He was completely enthralled when she cast his natal chart, and he happily settled down as her apprentice to learn how to read the stars and help her run the small "new age" shop she owned.
Nathaniel blossomed under Carol's teachings, laughing one of his few unfeigned laughs when he discovered her last name. His metaphysical knowledge deepened and he went back to school to complete his diploma.
The dreams and visions continued to haunt him, growing stronger but not much clearer, as his apprenticeship continued, to finally be revealed as memories of past lives. However, there was a strange block against them that neither he nor Carol could dissipate so all Nathaniel was left with were vague shards of "memory" and displaced emotions of love, grief, and great anger.
Wanting to increase his practical knowledge as well as try to fill the void inside him, he attended college and earned his B.A. in astronomy. It was while on campus one day that he was "discovered" by a modeling agent. Nathaniel's natural good looks and well formed physique made him an overnight sensation in the modeling world. He could never bring himself to go full time, part-time was more than enough to pay the bills, at least until Carol died anyway. He was twenty-four when she passed, she was sixty-eight.
It was a quiet, heartbreaking event. Nathaniel was losing the first person that had ever really given a damn about him and that he himself had ever cared about. Holding his large warm hand in her much smaller and cooler one, Carol gave him one last direction: to go to Tokyo and seek the crystals. Oddly enough, one week later he was offered a modeling campaign in Tokyo, and the stars aligned to indicate the beginning of a long journey. Nathaniel didn't need any more signs than that, so off he went. He has been living in Tokyo for the past two years, searching for crystals.
Powers:
Nathaniel's powers are only those of an opened and clever mind. He can read the stars and chart out life paths within their movements as well as very subtly manipulate energy currents on the level of a reiki practitioner. He has some minor psychic abilities(sensitivity) and can read peoples' energy fields, but the majority of his power is lost to him until he can reunite his soul and become Nephrite once more.
Past Life: Nephrite does not remember much of his past life at all. Sometimes he has strange dreams or receives mental flashes that show him doing some very horrible things. All any of this has succeeded in doing for him however is giving him headaches, a heavy sense of loss, and a longing for something and someone that he has never met or known. He just knows that the stars hold all the answers for him and that there is a lock on them that he is trying like hell to find the key to.
