"It's not just you," Hotaru told her quietly, smiling slightly at the look of disgust on Usagi's face. "I've been wondering about how I'll ever give orders to anyone myself." It was something she hadn't through about until now- she might have to lead people herself one day, and the idea made her uncomfortable.
Delighted that Usagi was so enthusiastic about it, the young girl's smile grew wider. "Whenever you're ready for me, I'm ready. Even if I don't get school credit for it, I still want to learn. It's important to me." Lightly she extended her hand to touch Usagi's, feeling suddenly shy.
So she wasn't the only one who felt that they were a little scattered, a bit lost. "Perhaps we've all been a little lost lately, trying to adjust to working together in a new setting. We've all been keeping secrets, all trying to figure out how we fit in. But I know that we'll be all right and come through this stronger than ever."
Her fingers tightened in the fabric of Usagi's clothing, pressing her face hard against the woman's shoulder. "But she's my friend," Hotaru whimpered, her voice small. "You aren't supposed to blame your friends- you aren't supposed to hate them for the things they did wrong." Her body went still at Usagi's words, lifting her face slightly. "My family. . ." The blond was right; they were all her family, even if they were scattered at the moment. Her family- her heart ached at the word, and she attempted to give Usagi a quivery smile. Maybe. . . maybe that was part of the reason Chibi Usa had been sent to the past. To make sure Hotaru wouldn't be alone or lost. It didn't make the pain of losing Chibi Usa any less, but it did make it a little more bearable to be reminded that she wouldn't be left to deal with it alone.
Her head nodded slightly; not many people would say such a thing, leave themselves so open. "I didn't want to upset you by asking. I've already upset you so much today." Her eyes widened in shock at Usagi's statement, though she didn't know why she was so taken aback. It was typical Usagi, to take the blame on herself to take so much on her own shoulders. "But you always have your reasons, Usagi. . ." Hotaru murmured. "I can't imagine that you would ever do anything that could change things so dramatically without having some purpose or knowing what the effects could be."
She had? Gazing in bewilderment at the queen, she ventured, "I don't see how. But if that's true. . . then I'm glad."
It didn't feel fine, but Hotaru nodded her head mutely, falling silent as she stared at her hands in her lap.
