Heralds are a "class" of people from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books.
Short version - they're chosen by spirits, usually reborn spirits, who have the form of white horses with blue eyes (and are also physical beings who can die and give birth etc) called Companions. They're "pure of heart" and have mind gifts or mage-craft. Their uniform is white (to match the Companions) and are often called "shoot me whites" (cause seriously, if you wear bright white, you're totally painting yourself as a target in battle!).
That's a super simplistic explanation.
