Character Info:
Name: Rei Hino
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Rank/Title: Princess/Sailor Senshi Mars
Place of Origin: Current Life: Tokyo, Japan
Current Home Location: The Crystal Palace
Preferred Earth Age: Though she's helping to bring in the new, I think that Rei may have her reservations about it. Most likely she feels connected with all three ages, but feels the most for the "middle" age which she was born into.
Occupation: Shrine Priestess in the Crystal Palace
Family: Her father and deceased mother and her grandfather, all of which have gone unnamed through the series.
Appearance:
Personality: ((I go more by the manga version, btw)) Rei isn't your stereotypical girl--she doesn't go "ga-ga" over clothes or make-up, doesn't chase boys and doesn't seem very interested in settling down into a married life. In fact, most of her peers have often labeled her as a very "spiritual" person, and not simply because of her job at her grandfather's shrine. Level-headed and rational, Rei's ability to see through to the heart of any given situation is tempered by the sharp tongue and no-nonsense wit she uses to address it. She does not balk at what has to be done, often becoming the first person to throw herself into a situation that is unfair or wrong.
Yet there are lines drawn by our Rei. When confronted with something which she cannot or will not tolerate, Rei will say so and retreat. Once she has made her mind about a subject it could take nothing short of an earthquake to move her. This is coupled with a sense of pride so deep-set that asking for help is often the last resort on her list, if it's even on the list at all.
History: Rei was born to a rich, political father and his physically weak wife. Theirs was not an easy marriage, though they did love one another, and Rei's father was often neglectful of his wife. This neglect became more and more as his wife grew sicker and eventually died when Rei was five. After this, Rei was sent to live with her maternal grandfather, as her father had little time to raise a child. Because of this, and this continued neglect, Rei has very little time, thought or love for her father.
Her life at the Hikawa Shrine was much happier than the first few years of her life. Rei got along well with her similarly quiet grandfather and grew to be very in touch with her religion and shrine. By the time that she was eight she had already approached her father about becoming a shrine maiden and her intent to become the head priestess in time. He was delighted by this and took her on as a maiden far before the normal age of most shrine workers.
Hino-San had not dissappeared entirely from her life, however. Upon each birthday she was required to attend a dinner with her father and accept a gift which she knew had been bought by his assistant. Coupled with this were various times in which she was brought before her father to pose for "happy family" pictures and media opportunities. Rei went along with all of this, tongue in cheek, because she was growing rapidly more attached to her father's assistant. Eventually, she fell in love with him.
At fourteen years of age Rei was revealed to be Sailor Mars. This didn't come as much of a surprise to her--at least not in the way that most persons would assume. Having always been skilled in fire-reading and possessed of other psychic abilities, Rei knew from a young age that there was something "different" about her; there was little surprising in having this confirmed. Rather, Rei was surprised by the very close and dear friends which she made upon having this power unlocked. Though popular at her school, Rei was used to being put upon a pedestal by her friends and never allowed to be just one of the girls. This was very welcome to her and she grew within it.
Her awakening as Mars coincided with her murder of the Dark General Jadeite, an event which did not bother Rei at the time but haunted her later in life. It was shortly after this when her long-time crush announced his intent to marry another woman. Rei was very devastated by this, and revealed all of this to her new-found friend Makoto.
She went on, however, and grew stronger through her experiences with the Senshi. Eventually she graduated from high school and attended a local University, much to the annoyance of her father who pressured her to apply for a much more prestigious school. Rei graduated with a double major in business and theology, which she considered more than adequate for running the shrine later on.
These days, Rei spends most of her time within the shrine at the Crystal Palace, helping to see to the spiritual health of the residents as well as any other which seeks her council. She finds her job very rewarding and can at times find the wedding plans a little tedious and unnecessary. For the most part, Rei seems to be rather happy, but there does seem to be the occasional moment of broody silence indicating that not all is as it appears.
Powers:
As a primary, Fire control in all its forms. The only power of hers which doesn't fit into this theme is the ability to use written charms to hurt, hinder or exorcise some demon/youma. The exorcisms only work on lower-power youma, but they do seem to hurt or otherwise bother most youma.
Secondary: Rei is a psychic. She occasionally has visions of the future on her own (normally when its something truly devastating) but most of her reading is done through a sacred fire, through use of meditation and mantra. It has also been mentioned in the manga that she can read fortunes through tarot cards with an alarming rate of accuracy.
Past Life: Rei remembers much more than she lets on. The memory has been very slow to develop over the last years, mostly coming in bits and flashes. Most of this she pretends to ignore or otherwise mentally "sets it aside" to examine when she feels that she can deal with it. Thus far, this time has not come up.
She has not reconnected with Mars in any shape or form.
