Luna flattened her ears irritably and muttered, “Just so long as I’m not made into some sort of experiment I’ll be sure not to give them any reason to believe I’m being disdainful.” She would have said more, but then Mamoru spoke up and said he had something to talk to Usagi about. She watched him carefully for a moment before deciding that the two needed privacy, therefore when Usagi wandered over to his side she growled at any nearby aides warning them to leave the two alone for a moment. She then settled herself down to wait until she was needed again, making certain to remain at a respectful distance so as not to overhear anything that she wasn’t suppose to, but still close enough to be there if she was needed.

Mamoru smiled sadly at Usagi, wishing that he could simply enjoy being with her instead of bringing up the subject he needed to talk about. He really was worried about how she would react and he hated upsetting her for any reason. However, he still believed that it would be far better for her to hear about it from him then from any other source.
Hesitating only a mere moment, he drew her closer and murmured, “Usako, there is something that I have to tell you but I want you to promise not to get upset without first hearing me out.”

"Experiment?" Usagi shook her head, not knowing what Luna was talking about. "No, you just have to talk to them. I'm sure the press secretary will brief you on interview protocol." Maybe she would sit in for that, it could be vastly amusing.
Usagi's eyes widened a little bit as Mamoru drew her near. His sad smile made her feel uneasy, and she cast a look of confusion back at Luna, but turned her undivided attention to her fiancé. However, his words sent her on high alert, and Usagi's eyes grew round. What would make a man give her that smile, draw her away privately, and then tell her to listen to him as he talked and not to get upset...?
Something was very wrong here.
"Mamo-chan, don't say that... You're scaring me..." Suddenly it came to her, and her eyes narrowed. "You're breaking up with me, aren't you?! You are! You're getting cold feet! I knew it! I knew you would get cold feet!" She exclaimed, thinking it had been a mistake to expose Mamoru to the political hubbub that they had just left. It must have scared him off! This was the last thing she needed right now!

Mamoru blinked in surprise at the way the conversation had suddenly gone. Why would Usagi think he planned to break up with her? As far as he was concerned it might be the other way around once he finished his converation, but there wasn't any way he would ever consider breaking off his wedding. He loved her far too much for that ...
Shaking his head quickly, Mamoru murmured reassuringly, "Usako you know I love you more then anything. I would never wish to break off our engagement ... please do calm down."

Usagi's eyes narrowed suspiciously at him. She wasn't sure. "Well it has to be something big! Don't tell me to calm down! I'm perfectly calm," she huffed. Well, perhaps perfectly wasn't the word, but she wasn't yelling, or wailing... yet.
"What could possibly be worse than breaking off our engagement, then? What's going on?!" Her mind filtered through all of the possible scenarios. "Are you dying?! You don't have some terminal disease, do you?! Just tell me Mamo-chan!" He must have a brain tumor. It was the only explanation! Maybe she could heal him with the ginzuishou! Yeah, that was it! It would be alright-- it had to be! Her poor Mamo-chan! Deathly ill at such a young age! Her eyes started to tear up at the thought. Usagi had already made up her mind that this was what must be wrong. It was the only worse thing than him breaking up with her!

Mamoru blinked in surprise when she asked him if he was dying because of some terminal disease. He was further dismayed to see her getting ready to cry, something he had a lot of trouble dealing with.
"Usako, I assure you that I am perfectly healthy. I am not dying, so please don't cry ..."
He hesitated a moment more before rushing on with what he had to say before she thought up some other reason and really did start to cry.
"Usako, earlier today in an attempt to get away from people needing something from me I decided to go swimming because it was somewhere that most people wouldn't think to look for me. Unfortunately Ami was there as well and when I was leaving one of the maids noticed that she had been there and took it entirely out of context."
He paused to make certain Usagi was still listening before continuing, "Ami informed me this afternoon that there is a nasty rumor going around that we did more then simply talk. I wanted to tell you about it before you heard it because I thought it would be easier to hear that way."
Mamoru fell silent watching Usagi closely, still very worried about how she would react. Finally her murmured softly, "I love you Usako, you know that I wouldn't betray you in that way and neither would Ami."

Usagi perked up a bit at his words. "You're not dying? Oh, thank goodness, Mamo-chan! You had me really worried! Then what is going on--" Luckily, he was starting to speak before she could come to her own conclusions.
Usagi's mouth dropped open in surprise, though she felt slightly deflated. It wasn't as bad as a broken engagement, or her Mamo-chan being ill, but it was hardly a relief to hear about.
"Err... right," she responded automatically to his question, though looked at him uneasily for the next minute afterwards. Usagi did truly know that Mamoru would not betray her, but it didn't stop her heart from constricting in jealousy. She hated even the thought of Mamoru in another woman's arms, and it was worse now that the entire palace was thinking those thoughts, too.
It doesn't matter what they think... I know Ami-chan and I know Mamo-chan, and it's not the worst thing that could happen to me, really it isn't... It's better than something really being wrong... just a silly rumor... But her thoughts couldn't stop the hurt. We've been together so sporadically these past few weeks... What if there's some truth to it-- surely Mamo-chan gets bored with me now and then, I'm not smart like Ami-chan is and he's so intellectual... But, why would he tell me if any of it was true? Gah, what am I thinking?! This is Mamo-chan and Ami-chan! They wouldn't do anything, and I know it! But maybe I should be spending more time with both of them...
Usagi finally pried her jaw open. "...How do they come up with such nasty things to say?" she whispered. In her own home, filling her head with unwanted images and thoughts-- why were people so cruel, that they would spread these things around?

It pained Mamoru to see the uneasy way Usagi looked at him. He hated when she was upset and he could see that Usagi was feeling hurt and he vaguely wondered if she might possibly believe that something had happened. He relaxed somewhat when she finally spoke up, but still it bothered him that she might even have lingering doubts about his faithfulness.
He hugged Usagi close in an attempt to comfort her and murmured softly, “I don’t know Usako, but as long as long as the people involved in a nasty rumor knows that it isn’t true then it doesn’t matter. There are just people who like to cause trouble to entertain themselves as well as others. They don’t stop to think about the harm they can cause.”

From down the hall Luna watched Usagi worriedly. Although Luna couldn’t hear what was going on, she could see quite clearly that whatever Mamoru had said had caused Usagi to be hurt. She rose to her paws with every intention of heading over to find out what was wrong. However before she had really even moved more then two steps Luna paused uncertainly. She didn’t want to interfere in their privacy unless she was wanted and since Usagi hadn’t technically called her then she might not be wanted. Besides, Mamoru did seem to be trying to comfort Usagi and so once again Luna settled herself down to wait.

Usagi embraced Mamoru in return, glad to partake of his affection, especially after that jolting exchange.
"I just don't get people sometimes, Mamo-chan... How they can be so inconsiderate... It's beyond my powers of understanding..." She had to erase that image from her mind somehow, just visualizing the rumor made her feel slightly ill.
Usagi, you really are being ridiculous about this... she scolded herself. "I really should have a thicker skin, though... I mean, after all that's been said about me already, you would think I'd be able to just laugh this off..." It was that much harder when it included her fiancé, and not just because of Usagi's painful prick of jealously.
"I hate having you exposed to this nastiness, too." It didn't seem to matter so much anymore when it was about her, though the first few times had been very hard to deal with. But it hurt worse when she knew that Mamoru was suffering under it. She couldn't help but want to protect him from the political intrigues and the backstabbing of public life. Usagi hadn't been the Queen for very long, but already politics had made an indelible mark on her psyche. More than people who told nasty rumors, she had an even harder time comprehending those who actively sought power. Who in their right mind would want this job?

Mamoru continued holding Usagi close, wishing that he hadn’t had to share that bit of information with her. He knew that she was still being bothered by what he had told her, even if she seemed to be handling it ok.
“People are just people, a lot of people do things that make them feel good regardless of how it effects others. There are those that probably don’t even realize they might hurt others when they are doing things, they just do them on the spur of the moment.”
He glanced down at Usagi when she mentioned hating having him exposed to the nastiness of rumors and murmured, “Usako, you don’t need to worry about me. I can handle anything anyone says. I’m not about to let a rumor bother me terribly much, it’s just what people do. I was far more concerned with how you were going to feel.”

"You can tell it to me as many times as you want, Mamo-chan, but in my heart I will never understand people that do things like that," Usagi said sadly. Sometimes it seemed that others could; Usagi could certainly empathize with such people, but never truly grasp hold of their behavior. Even studying psychology had sometimes left her with more questions than answers. "I worry about you the same way you worry about me," Usagi smiled, pulling away. "And I don't think that will ever change for either of us, no matter how much we tell each other not to worry about the other. We should get to dinner... If we continue talking about this rumor--" and if Usagi continued to think about it, "--I really will probably get upset." It was not the mental image that she liked to entertain. "Besides, I don't want to keep Luna waiting for too long... I think you deserve a bowl of rich cream, Luna," Usagi called, making her way back over to the cat. (We can close it off right about here if you want ^^; I'm happy to continue with all of the political stuff, but don't want to bore you or have it drag on too long ^^ .
