Motoki ignored Mamoru's comment about not being pathetic. His friend obviously wasn't listening to himself, but Motoki wasn't the type of guy to harp on it. Mamoru made his own choices, and while Motoki didn't mind occasionally pointed out when Mamoru was being an idiot, he wasn't prone to repeat it. Instead, he dropped his bottle off in the trashcan and grabbed another pair of beers from the fridge. The bottles clinked together as he wrapped his fingers around the necks and yanked them off the shelf.
"I'm not sure when exactly she'll be returning, but I don't think she'll be here for the New Year. All depends on the status of the dig and their progress. I wish she were going to be here - the holiday won't be nearly as fun without her, but I'm used to it..." Motoki half-lied. He'd never be 'used to' sitting around alone. "What about you?" Motoki asked, keeping the question unspecific. Everyone knew Usagi was throwing a huge bash at the palace for everyone who was anyone and Mamoru had just transitioned from somebody to nobody about four days ago.

Mamoru frowned in sympathy when he heard that Reika wasn’t going to be here. However, all of his sympathy went out the window the moment Motoki brought up the question of what was he going to do. He hadn’t actually been thinking about it, had only asked after Reika for conversations sake.
What was he going to do? Before his life turned upside down he had obviously been going to be at the ball being held at the palace, but now? He would probably wind up sitting in his new apartment sulking, just like he had been doing every night since Usagi had broken off the engagement. “I don’t know what I’m going to be doing Motoki. I’m not exactly in the partying mood right now ...”
Still, maybe he should reconsider his options. There wasn’t any reason why he couldn’t still go to that ball. He seriously doubted that anyone had rescinded his invitation, they wouldn’t have had time and even if they had they probably hadn’t even thought about it. Therefore he was perfectly within his rights to go to the ball and no one could object. If he was going to attempt to win Usagi back, well that night would be a perfect opportunity to start. After all it wasn’t going to be that easy to get back into the palace these days, not as anything more then a guest and a guest wouldn’t be able to just casually run across the queen whenever they wanted. He’d have to deal with the senshi though, and whatever security measures that Lucan had put up. It probably wouldn’t be easy to get to talk to her then either, but at the very least he would be able to see her.
Glancing back to his friend, Mamoru added, “Technically, I could go to the ball ... I still have an invitation.”

Motoki returned to the living room with the beer and passed one of the bottles to Mamoru. Mamoru's tone indicated his displeasure with Motoki's question. Given that Mamoru had brought up New Years Eve, it was a natural question, although Motoki had considered the implacations his words carried. He thought back to all his times as Mamoru's friend, but the pair had never spent much time discussing the deeper emotions involved with making-up and breaking-up with women. Not that all relationships didn't have their difficulties, and he and Mamoru had offered each other plenty of advice, but those situations were so minor compared to 'my fiancee DUMPED me' that beyond telling Mamoru to suck it up and win her back, he wasn't sure what to say.
So instead he focused on Mamoru's comment about the invitation. "Well you know the saying, out of sight, out of mind, right? Take the reverse of that as well. I say you go to the party and have a good time." Motoki lifted his beer. "Remind her of the man she loves, not the one who kept some secret from her. You aren't moving on, and she needs to know that, but she needs to remember why you were together in the first place right?" There, advice, Motoki thought to himself before tipping back his beer and taking a long swallow. "Or just drink your beer. You always feel a little better with some beer in the stomach."

Mamoru accepted the bottle without much thought, still uncertain about what he wanted to do. Should he go, or would it be best to stay away? He gazed quietly at Motoki when his friend told him that he should go and decided that he was right in some aspects. There were many reasons why he should go ...
If he went Usagi might remember the times before she found out about his secret. She might remember the hard times they had both gone through and the love that had gotten them through it. She had to know that he loved her more then anything, he had proven it to her time and time again right? Going to the party would allow him to see Usagi, possibly talk to her but at the very least to see her. There was the off chance that she wouldn’t be angry anymore, but he kind of doubted that. He had hurt her and hurt like that didn’t just go away over night, more importantly though he could see how she was faring.
On the other hand, there were reasons for him not to go ...
If he went he would have to deal with her senshi and that might not be a very pleasant thing to do. Dealing with Ami the other night had been relatively painless, but she was a good deal quieter then some of her sisters. If he went, there were going to be some people that thought he was being a bit pathetic, chasing after the person that had dumped him. There was going to be some people that thought he was still chasing after Usagi’s throne. This would bring the press back to him, not that they had actually left. He was certain he wouldn’t like whatever stories they came up with about why he had gone to the party. His reputation had already taken quite a beating and he doubted it would get any better as time went on.
Did he care about any of that? Not really ... at this point he could care less about what happened to him. He could deal with the senshi, though he wasn’t certain he could actually get along with some of them at the moment. He could deal with the press and whatever stories they managed to create. At this point he wasn’t certain he cared about his reputation ...
He was more concerned with being able to see Usagi. It had only been a few days since he had last seen her, a few days since he had been happily engaged to the woman that meant everything to him and it already felt like his life was empty without her by his side. Regardless of what people thought of him in the long run, he needed to fix things. He needed to at least attempt to make things right again.
“Motoki, if I’m going then you are going to go with me. If I went on my own I’d more then likely manage to make things worse then they already are.”
Mamoru tipped his bottle up and took a long swallow before grinning broadly at his friend and adding, “Besides, I’d need someone to run interference with Usagi’s senshi if they should decide to take offense to my being there...”

The beer was beginning to warm Motoki inside and out, a feeling he always relished. That, and the ability to just let loose. The pressures of life eased up after a beer or two (or three or four) until Motoki no longer thought about them. Having Mamoru here damped the speed at which he might drink, but given Mamoru's state of mind, there was little reason to think his friend's presence would keep him away from the refridgerator. Motoki lifted the drink and savored another long sip. At least beer took a hell of a lot longer to take effect than shots of hard liquor.
"Of course I'll go with you, Mamoru," Motoki said with a nod. He'd have probably spent the New Year sitting at home drinking himself stupid or sitting at a bar drinking himself stupid. Neither was the best use of his time. Motoki was well aware of the problem he had when he was drinking alone, even if he did nothing to stop it. At least at a party, with people to talk to and interact with, he far less likely to need to drink more than an average amount. "You point the way, and I'll take out the first senshi that comes your way. Perhaps whoever comes first can attempt to teach me to dance!"

Feeling more relaxed then he had been feeling earlier that morning, Mamoru took another sip from his beer before grinning at his friend. “I’m sure one of them could teach you to dance Motoki, anything to keep them out of my way.”
He would have to figure out the best plan of action to win Usagi back, but he didn’t feel like doing that now. For now he wanted to simply relax, visit his friend, and allow both the company and the drink to help him ignore his misery for the time being.
“So Motoki, other then pizza and beer, what were your plans for today?”

Motoki laughed, "Plans? Pizza and Beer were as far as I got tonight. I do have some work I probably could be doing, but since you showed up, you've rescued me from having to spend my evening pouring over a divestiture contract that that the purchasing company is never going to agree to anyway unless their lawyer's have no brains." He swung his beer bottle around, "Then again, I've seen some companies sign some pretty stupid contracts, even when we've advised them against doing so." He shook his head. His job was to ensure all the paper work was in order and that his client was well respresented. They didn't, however, have to take all of his advice.
"You want to go out and do something?" Motoki asked focusing back on the matter at hand. He doubted Mamoru cared all that much for boring lawyer talk anyway. "There is a bar down the street that has live music and the bands are usually decent."

Mamoru smiled half-heartedly at Motoki’s comment about rescuing him from his work. He wasn’t terribly interested in all the lawyer talk about contracts, but he was polite enough to nod occasionally in understanding.
Motoki’s next words surprised him just a little, he hadn’t really had any intention of going anywhere but here. He hadn’t been in the mood for something like live music awhile ago, but why not? It might prove to be fun and it would also serve as a continued distraction to his own dark thoughts.
He quickly finished off his bottle before saying, “That sounds like a great plan to me Motoki, a lot better then going back home and sulking about at any rate. Lead the way ...”

"Great!" Motoki replied with a nod. In true male fashion, he left his plate and empty beer bottle sitting on the T.V. tray as he stood and headed for the door. He swiped his keys off the kitchen counter, grabbed his jacket from where he'd dropped it on the floor when he'd come home from work and ushered Mamoru out the door. Both men slipped on their shoes before Motoki locked the door.
"This place is a quick walk. Only a few blocks down the road." Motoki said as he decended the flight of stairs between his apartment and the sidewalk. The air outside was chilly and the sun had set while the pair had eaten dinner. Motoki walked briskly to keep himself warm. A few minutes later they arrived at the bar, where Motoki gave the doorman a quick wave. He was a usual here, especially when Reika was gone, and getting in proved fairly easy for him. He gave the doorman a quick nod and tilted his head toward Mamoru to indicate the man was with him, although the doorman would have had to have been an idiot not to recognize the future (or former) King of the New Earth. He voiced no object to letting either man in.
"Come on, let's head up to the bar and get something to drink. This place is pretty low-key, which is how I like things."
