Luna felt bad for Hotaru as she watched her reaction to the news. She reached a hand over and laid it on Hotaru’s shoulder briefly in a gesture of comfort, but she didn’t really have anything to say that would make her feel better.
She glanced over as Minako began an explanation, nodding in agreement to everything she said. She kept quiet until the end, not having any reason to interrupt.
“Mamoru has been taking advice from them, all the while allowing us to believe that they were dead and gone.”
Luna hesitated a moment before continuing, “It’s not just the Shitennou, they were only the last straw I think. The fact is Mamoru has never been entirely forthcoming with anything personal to him, not even to Usagi. You can’t have a relationship together if you don’t know anything about how that person thinks or feels.”

Hotaru listened to Minako’s explanation numbly, hearing the words, but strangely detached from them. She could see nothing before her eyes but Chibi Usa, her body shimmering and threatening to disappear, as it had once so long ago when the bond between Mamoru and Usagi had been endangered. Somewhere among the gates of time, was the future wavering, blinking in and out like a bad film image?
She felt Luna and Minako’s hands on her body, anchoring her, their words gentle and well intentioned, but nothing they said could make things all right. This wasn’t just about Chibi Usa, though that alone was enough to break her heart. This was about the fact that she had put her faith in the Prince and Princess time and time again, and now- it was almost as if fine cracks were beginning to run across the surface of that belief.
“Usagi-chan knew what kind of person Mamoru-san was,” she began softly. “She knew he kept things close to himself, was a very private person. How can she expect-”
She forced the words back down her throat, not wanting them to take them the wrong way. She loved the Queen with all her heart and did not want to speak unkindly of her, but she couldn’t help the confused anger and sorrow bubbling inside her. Why? Why? a small child like voice inside her was whispering. Soul mates weren’t supposed to break up- a Princess and Prince were supposed to live happily ever after, not leave each other when they couldn’t find a way past their troubles.
Attempting to keep herself calm, Hotaru glanced at Luna. “That’s true. . . but you can’t have a relationship if you can’t stay together and work things out either.” She winced, knowing how that must sound to the other two women. “I’m sorry- I shouldn’t question Usagi or Mamoru’s judgment. It isn’t my place. What would I know of such things anyway?”
For the first time since she had entered the ballroom that evening, she found herself wanting to snag one of the flutes of champagne, never mind the fact that she was a minor. She wanted to do nothing more than drowned the horrible revelations in a swirl of alcohol the way adults were able to.

Minako lifted an eyebrow at Hotaru's perceptive words. Mamoru was a private person. Even as close as he and Usagi had been, and as much as the senshi loved and protected him, there had always been a wall between Mamoru and themselves - between Tuxedo Kamen and the Sailor Senshi. Minako wondered if Prince Endymion had been as elusive in his past life and Mamoru was in the present. Although, Minako had to admit to herself, King Endymion of the future had welcomed them with open arms, sharing everything he could about the dire situation he and Neo-Queen Serenity had been in. The thought left her to wonder if perhaps Mamoru eventually learned how to become a less private person.
"Hota-chan, don't dismiss your feelings so easily. You have every right to be upset right now, although I'd give Usagi some time before you talk to her about Chibiusa. She hurts for her daughter as well." Minako reached over and gave Hotaru a side hug. "I haven't lost faith that they will be together again. Haven't we all grown up believing in destiny? Haven't we all felt like the future was so clear? How do we know this isn't just one more test of their love and faith; kami knows they've gone through so many already. Maybe Mamoru still has things to learn and perhaps Usagi needs some time to find herself before becoming a married Queen of the Earth. She's been with Mamoru since she was what, fifteen?"
Minako was rambling, but deep in her own heart she hoped that every word was true. She believed, as much as Hotaru did, that the Prince and the Princess were destined to be together.

Luna sighed softly, not really knowing how to comfort Hotaru. There wasn’t anything she could say to make this better. She was somewhat surprised at how perceptive the younger senshi was, but then it was never wise to underestimate Hotaru. She was young but she wasn’t your ordinary child. She had experience beyond her years and they really should all remember that.
She nodded in agreement to what Minako said and murmured, “Minako is right Hotaru, don’t dismiss your feelings. You are a senshi as well and we all value your opinions, what’s more you are a very smart young lady.”
Luna paused silently for a moment before adding, “Things are tough right now, but if they are meant to work things out then they will. Whatever the outcome things are going to be ok.”

Hotaru felt as if her chest had become so frozen and icy in the light of this information, but somehow, there was enough of a thaw from Minkao’s gentle hug to let the pearly tears trickle down her cheeks. She had never been as close to the Inner Senshi as she would have liked, and that Minako and Luna were here now, comforting her when they certainly must have a lot on their own plates, overwhelmed her.
“Maybe you’re right,” she whispered. “She was young- they both were. That doesn’t make it any better though. Or any easier.” Her eyes flickered to Usagi, and then to Mamoru, and shook her head, her lips trembling. “Look at them- they’re so unhappy. Anyone can see it- I just didn’t know why until you told me. They both keep pretending- just like everyone here, pretending that everything is going to be ok.”
Her eyes lifted slightly to meet Luna’s clear sapphire gaze. “You sound. . . you sound like Setsuna-mama,” she murmured, her heart contracting painfully. “She would tell me the same thing, to trust in the future, and in fate.” Her head shook slightly from side to side, her mouth tightening. “But I’m not going to simply stand aside and wait for the future we’ve been promised to arrive. I owe the Royal family more than that. I don’t know what I can do, but if there is a way for me to mend things, I will do it.”
She exhaled, suddenly not wanting to discuss this matter any further. She feared doing so might make her lose what little composure she had left tonight, and she could not afford that. Dabbing at her eyes with a napkin, she attempted to change the topic. “I’m sorry- this is supposed to be a fun time for us, not one to dwell on the unpleasantness around us. I did not mean to dredge up these unhappy thoughts. Tell me, what are your plans for the coming year? Minako, are you going back on tour, or will you stay with us? And you, Luna, are you still training Usagi-chan?”

Minako gave Hotaru one last squeeze. "I know Usagi still loves him, no matter what they are going through. She can't hide her feelings, because they are written on her face. I only hope that Mamoru can still see them and that he does what he needs to win her back. I just hope she forgives him. She's always been so understanding of people and their needs and the way they are. It is strange to see her decide that Mamoru's need to be private is no longer acceptable."
Minako sipped her drink, pausing for a moment then smiled at the change of subject. They were after all, there to have a good time, and with the exception of the explosion and the sadness of Usagi and Mamoru, Minako was having a good time.
"Well actually, Hotaru, Usagi asked me to be her second-in-command. There is still a lot for me to learn here before I attempt to go on tour again, plus, Zachary and I will soon begin filming our movie. Sometime this month I believe production begins. I've also been working on some new songs, so I might find myself back in the studio, if I can manage the time between the movie and the governmental duties. Really, Usagi's been so stressed. The more we can all do to help her out, the better she'll be...." Left unsaid was perhaps the notion that Usagi would have more time to fix her relationship. But Minako didn't want to dreg up the subject again, so she spared them all the direct comment. "How has school been going for you, Hotaru?"

Luna gazed sadly over at both Usagi and Mamoru as Hotaru mentioned that they were both unhappy and pretending otherwise. She briefly wondered what had changed so suddenly that had Usagi deciding that Mamoru needed to change his very personality. Luna agreed with her, she just wondered what had caused the change. She sighed softly and turned back to her companions.
She smiled a little when Hotaru said she sounded like Setsuna, though she doubted very much that she could come close to having the wisdom that the Time Guardian possessed. Luna reached and patted Hotaru’s hand in another gesture of comfort, murmuring, “We all will Hotaru, if there is a way to mend things then we are all going to find it. In the end though, we’ll have to trust them to make the best decisions for themselves. We can’t run their lives for them.”
Luna nibbled a bit on the rest of her food, grateful when Hotaru changed the subject. She didn’t really want to talk about such unpleasant things right now. This was a night to enjoy and she didn’t want to waste it.
She listened quietly as Minako spoke about becoming second-in-command, something that she had only just learned from Artemis earlier that day. Usagi hadn’t spoken to any of them about that decision of hers, though she would have agreed if she had. Minako was the best choice to be the second-in-command considering she was the leader.
“Usagi has been really stressed lately, from more then just the current problems. As for training her, I’ve been very proud of Usagi lately. She’s come a long way from the irresponsible teenager she was when I first met her. I don’t really need to train her anymore, it’s more like I try to advise her in the best course of action. Though really, I’m having to learn my way through a lot of this governmental stuff as well. There is so many things that she understands better then I do now, like how to deal diplomatically with everyone she talks to.”

“Anyone can see she still loves him despite how well she thinks she’s hiding it.” Amythest eyes focused on Mamoru for a brief moment before continuing, “And it’s easy to see he’s still in love with her. He’s always watching, always looking out to protect her, even now.”
“You’d think after all of this, she would understand the need for privacy,” Hotaru murmured, shaking her head. “After all, her own privacy has become a thing of the past. For all of us.” Her eyes closed, remembering the unpleasant shock of having the press swarm her at her first day at school after all the secrets had been unveiled and Usagi had announced her intention to be Queen.
“Second in command,” she repeated, her eyes widening, considering Minako in a whole new light. She had always known that Minako was the leader of the Inner Senshi, but it still gave her pause to think about how this would affect the globe trotting, famous actress and singer. What would she have to give up for that? But she approved of Usagi’s choice- Minako was steady and loyal, with a surprisingly clear sight that she knew the Queen would come to rely on in the days ahead.
“A movie?” she perked up slightly. “I’d heard rumors, but I didn’t know they were true. I can just imagine how your fans will be reacting- I expect I’ll be hounded by my classmates for autographs.”
Minako's question caused her to pause, careful how she phrased her answer. “School is. . .school,” she said softly, shrugging her small shoulders in an attempt to brush the subject off as unimportant. “It’s. . .” A soft sigh escaped her lips. “Well. It’s better than it was in my past life. Social wise, anyway. The others don’t’ shun me, but they don’t exactly greet me with open arms. But considering the alternative, I don't mind so much.” Managing a smile, she shook her head. “But I enjoy learning- I’ve been reading the most wonderful books. . .”
Never mind the fact that she glossed over the fact that she was lonely, and though no one was cruel or shunning of her, no one was her friend either.
Listening to Luna, she could see her pride in the young woman she had guided and advised, and smiled softly, lifting her glass to take a sip of water. “That’s wonderful to hear,” she acknowledged, touching the back of her hand lightly. “We all knew she had it in her. I’m glad she’s doing so well, and learning so quickly. And I would not worry- you have a knack for politics, Luna.” Hotaru grimaced slightly, her nose wrinkling. “Certainly more than I do, that’s for certain. My government teacher despairs of me ever understanding the simplest monarchy. I’m sure you’ll know more than any of us soon, save Usagi.”

Minako let the conversation about Usagi and Mamoru and their issues die with Hotaru's last words. The younger senshi had deserved to know, but short of advising their queen there was little the senshi themselves could do to impact the relationship. Usagi and Mamoru would have to sort out their differences themselves, and Minako's only option was to be there to support whatever decision was made. As hard as that would be for Hotaru, all the senshi had a duty to stand behind Usagi no matter what she decided. And as long as Minako had known Usagi, she'd always ended up in the right place, even she led them well off the beaten path to get there.
"I'd agreed to the deal a few months ago, but filming couldn't start until a male co-star was selected. Apparently, Khalid," Minako motioned to where the Arabic man stood on the other side of the room, "Had a bit of a hand in things. I wouldn't have thought someone like him would be interested in movies, or the arts..." She couldn't stop staring at Khalid, now that she'd found him in the crowd and her voice took on an almost dreamy quality, "but he is. He's funding the movie."
As the conversation turned to Hotaru's school experience, Minako's attention returned to the table. "I don't see why the other kids wouldn't accept you. Your position in Usagi's court doesn't change who you are as a person. Are they.. intimidated by you? And I suppose I could go do an autograph signing at your school if you think you'd enjoy that. You, not them. I mean, of course they would, but .. oh I'm rambling." Minako took another sip of her drink. She hadn't had much, but she didn't have the opportunity to drink much, so one or two drinks could get her buzz going. The benefit of that was she rarely had hangovers.
She nodded her agreement as Luna piped in about Usagi's growth. They'd all grown, her included.

Luna glanced back toward Usagi and Mamoru for a moment before turning back to her companions. There was nothing else she could say about the matter however and so she allowed the subject to die with Hotaru’s last words. Whatever happened next between the two would be entirely up to Usagi and Mamoru at this point. They could do nothing other then advise and then to be respectful of whatever decision was made in the end.
She was quick to notice that once Minako had glanced over toward Khalid she couldn’t seem to keep her eyes off of him. She was also very aware of the almost dreamy tone in Minako’s voice as she spoke about the man. This worried Luna a little bit, but only because she wasn’t yet certain that they could trust the Shitennou. She didn’t want any of the senshi getting hurt, but she trusted their judgement and so she declined to say anything.
Luna nodded in agreement with Minako’s assessment that she didn’t see why the other kids would accept her. Hotaru was a sweet girl and she was certain that if the other children took the time to get to know her then they would agree as well. “Have you ever attempted to talk to them Hotaru? Sometimes other kids just need a push in the right direction, if you talked with them they might see that you share a lot of the same interests that they do ...”
She smiled at the mention of Minako going over to Hotaru’s school for an autographing session. If Hotaru agreed, it might be just the thing to break the ice and allow the other children to get to know Hotaru. Although she didn’t say anything, Luna suspected that Hotaru was a very lonely little girl. She hadn’t had any friends before Chibiusa and now she didn’t even have her.
Luna nodded in response to Hotaru saying that she would catch on to the politics. She was still certain that Artemis was a better diplomat then she was, but she was doing ok so far. She was learning and she was actually enjoying the role she now played. Schoolwork was something she had always had to badger Usagi over time and time again and so when Hotaru mentioned having trouble with monarchy in school Luna automatically replied, “If you are having trouble with things like monarchy in school Hotaru, I’m sure we could find someone to tutor you in the subject. That way you could please your government teacher a little more ...”

At the mention of this Khalid, Hotaru followed Minako’s gaze to the tall man on the other side of the room, raising an eyebrow at the tone in the other’s voice. Love it seemed was definitely in the air for some of her sisters, and she couldn’t help but feel slightly amused, as well as a little curious. As much as it would dismay her Haruka-papa to learn, she was beginning to have an interest in romance, and couldn’t help but be interested in the relations those closest to her were developing.
“He is, is he? That’s very generous of him.” Leaning forward slightly, she couldn’t help the mischievous words from slipping out. “I imagine his interest doesn’t lie as much in the arts as it does in you.” Her lips curled into a smile, unable to help her inquisitiveness with her next words. “I don’t suppose I could get a little hint as to what the movie will be about, could I? I know it’s supposed to be a huge secret . . . but I’m very interested.”
She shifted uneasily, her hair sliding forward across her pale face with the motion, her slim amethyst silk covered fingers moving up to tuck the loose locks back behind her ear. “I’m not sure what it is, really. I don’t think it’s so much me being a member of the court, though that certainly doesn’t help things I imagine. Intimidated? I suppose they could be.” Her shoulders rose and fell in a shrug, uncomfortable. “I feel it’s more about what my powers are- even you all were afraid of me for that reason.”
Shaking her head, she gave a small laugh, trying to soften the issue not wanting them to worry about her. “I’m probably imagining it though. I’m too used to being alone- I don’t really know how to make friends, I admit.” Glancing at Luna, she bit her lip. “I’ve tried to talk to them, but they act so . . . awkward.” Hotaru couldn’t help but feel frustrated, more with herself than anything. She knew most of it was probably her own fault- she didn’t relate well to others her age, and really, it wasn’t a surprise that she struggled with it. Most of her friends were women- and men- twice her age, and her soul was old.
At Minako’s suggestion of an autograph signing, her head came up, eyes widening in surprise. “You would do that? But you don’t have the time- you’re so busy. I couldn’t ask you to do that. . . ” The idea did sound fun, she had to admit though.
“It’s really government in general,” she told Luna. “Not just the monarchy system. Really, you would think I would understand it better, all things considered. It probably would be nice to have someone to explain politics and governments better. My teacher is nice, but she only knows how to explain it one way, and I don’t seem to be grasping the concept.”

Hotaru’s perceptive comment left Minako blushing. She was very aware that Khalid was interested in her. If funding the movie were simply a matter of arts, he would not have bothered pursuing her that evening for a dance, paying her absorbent complements and offering her travel plans to visit him homeland in the future. And then there was the chemistry, and the déjà vu, that she experienced with him. While she might be aware of her past and she was certain he was not, Minako felt Khalid still experienced the same sense of attract that drew from their past relationship rather than their present. Of course, since Khalid had yet to awaken unlike Nephrite and Jaedite, Minako still had time to sort out her feelings and his in the Earthly sense before adding in the past life complications.
“I really think he just likes the premise,” Minako replied teasing her sister. “As for the movie, no hints yet. Not that I don’t trust you, but there are far too many members of the press at this gathering and the last thing I need is to be accused of leaking out plot secrets! I’ll be able to share a few details with you soon enough, and I’m sure the director would allow me to bring someone to the set to watch the filming, considering my position in both the movie and the government.” Minako briefly wondered if her governmental position would now get in the way of filming – movies could be a huge demand on time – but she pushed the thought aside. She could handle it.
Minako frowned. Hotaru was right about her powers. But while the elder senshi had made killing Hotaru before she awakened one of their priorities, Usagi and the inner senshi had never once entertained the thought. “We might have been afraid of your powers, but we were never afraid of you, Hotaru. I hope you know we always accepted you both as a person and as Chibiusa’s friend. Your friends at school should be able to do the same. There is no reason for them to fear you, they simply do not understand. Perhaps we need to push for education of the history of the Silver Millennium and the Sailor Senshi in the classroom. All of our past was forgotten when your scythe dropped the first time by both those left on Earth after the Moon Kingdom was destroyed. Maybe they just need to learn that your powers are by your own control and there is nothing for them to be fearful of. And of course I’ll come. Anything to help. Maybe we could share the story of the Silver Millennium together. ”
Minako listened to Luna’s suggestion and nodded, “A tutor would be a good suggestion, if the issue is your teacher. Lord knows Usagi and I ended up in so many make-up classes in high school! I wish we could use the teacher excuse but the truth is we were just both lazy.”

He noticed the girls looking somber for a moment but they seem to perk back up. Artemis did not focus on their conversation and was determined not to eavesdrop. He was curious about Minako’s look. He noticed her gaze had gone to this Khilad and she seemed to be smiling in a wistful way. He did not know why he felt weary of the man. Minako’s last comment about tutors caused him to smile. So he decided it was the best time to talk with Minako. He spotted Luna and gave her flirtatious wink as he walked over.
“Pardon my interruption ladies but I must burrow Minako for at least one dance.” He offered his hand like a gentleman to his dear friend.

Luna shifted uncomfortably at the mention that Khalid might have an interest in Minako. However, again she decided to not say anything and simply trust in the judgement of the senshi. They were certainly capable of knowing what was best for them, especially now that they were no longer little girls. Still it made her uncomfortable to think that there was such a big connection between Minako and Khalid that even Hotaru had picked up on it.
She frowned when Hotaru mentioned people might be afraid of her powers. It was certainly true, Hotaru had powers that could be frightening. However, she didn’t like the thought that any of the civilians might be afraid of any of them for any reason. The senshi were here to protect them, there wasn’t any reason to be frightened of them.
Luna glanced over at Minako when she made her suggestion to push for education of the history of the Silver Millennium and the Sailor Senshi in the classroom. Nodding in agreement, Luna murmured, “That’s not a bad idea actually. I’ll mention it to Usagi later when things are a little more settled after the festivities are over. Educating the general public, not just the children but perhaps some of the adults as well might go a long way in helping people understand the Senshi and their powers more.”
She smiled at the youngest senshi and said, “I’ll arrange to have a tutor for you then. I’m sure you will grasp the concept before you know it.” Luna glanced toward Minako and added, “You both might have been lazy about schoolwork, but in the end you both did very well. It isn’t just Usagi that I’ve been proud of you know, all of you have turned into very accomplished women.”
When Artemis walked up and gave her a flirtatious wink, Luna blushed a little and fiddled nervously with a strand of her hair. She glanced sideways at Minako and murmured, “Go on Minako, go have fun. Hotaru and I will keep ourselves company, won’t we Hotaru?” She glanced back toward the younger girl with a smile.

Seeing Minako blush confirmed Hotaru’s feelings. There was a strong connection between Khalid and Minako, one that had made her sensitive senses tingle- one as strong as the one she had felt between Makoto and Nathan. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of all this, having never encountered the men before, but she decided to simply watch and wait. There was nothing she could do at the moment, especially with her lack of information on matters. Glancing at Luna she caught the discreet movement of discomfort, a slight frown smoothing over her brow and disappearing almost as quickly as she wondered if the wise gentle advisor disapproved of Khalid, or if it was more that of a concerned parental figure watching her young daughter growing up. Luna had always been so protective of the senshi, and it must be hard for her to see them becoming young women with romantic relationships.
“I understand,” she returned, though as her eyes flickered to the crowd she felt a flicker of contempt; even before she had been brought into the spotlight she had never approved of how celebrities were hounded, and that held true now. How frustrating that they couldn’t speak freely, not even in their own home. She prayed that she would avoid media attention for a long while yet. Turning her attention away from such thoughts, she focused on Minako’s words, brightening at the mention of visiting the set. “That would be wonderful,” she told the older woman shyly. “I’d like that very much.”
Her amethyst eyes flickered up to meet warm summer blue, and felt reassured by the honesty in Minako’s expression and her tone. “Thank you, Minako-chan,” she murmured, her heart flooding with gratitude as well as love for her sisters who were so kind and patient with her and her doubts. “I hope you are right- I don’t want to be feared anymore, not by those I want to protect.” She blinked at the mention of teaching the history of themselves and the Silver Millenium, nibbling on her lip as she considered things. The idea had merit, she had to admit. There was certainly much she did not know or remember herself, the majority of her life during the time a deep slumber filled with dreams she had been told by the late Queen Serenity would be glimpses of the reality she would not be able to share, though there was no way to tell truth from fiction in that state. “That history has never been recorded or shared with anyone. . . but perhaps someone should set themselves to the task of working on it so that it can be released to the world.” Touched at Minako’s declaration, she touched her hand with her own silk clad fingers. “I might take you up on that offer,” she murmured.
A giggle escaped Hotaru’s lips. “At least you’re honest about it,” she returned, smiling. “It doesn’t change the fact that you and Usagi both succeeded in the end- look at both of you now.” Her smile widened. “Thank you Luna- I appreciate that. I’ve been a little worried that my grades might slip if I didn’t do something, so it is a weight off my mind. I’ll leave the matter in your hands, and trust you to find a good teacher.”
She watched Artemis approach and was relieved to see his behavior with Luna had not changed. At least one relationship seemed to be holding strong, and it helped ease her tension slightly. It was a sweet moment that gave her hope, and she was amused to see Luna slightly flustered. “I don’t mind,” she chimed in, giving Minako and Artemis her blessing with a small nod.
