Thoughts still fresh from her afternoon with Nathaniel, Rei returned to the palace just after dusk with her mind set on what had to be done. Telling Usagi something which needed to be kept secret wasn't something that Rei would have done in the past--at least not if there had been any other choice. It wasn't that she didn't trust her friend, but that she knew the girl too well. Usagi's ability to keep her mouth shut had only been learned after long, extensive practice at it.
Yet should it be kept a total secret? Rei was at war with herself over that one. Perhaps she should go to Makoto or Ami with it... but no. Usagi was the best bet, for now--especially as Rei had been gone all day and had given Mamoru plenty of time to tell the woman his side of the story. For all that Rei knew, it was possible that Usagi already knew and had made friends with Jadeite.
The thought of that caused the woman to shudder openly, causing some of the servants skittering about to cast her strange looks. Rei glared them into silence, however, and strode past them at her usual fast clip. She passed without question through the Queen's guards and into the woman's quarters. Usagi's itinerary had her at a private dinner right now, most likely still reading over some bills and chatting at the serving maids. If Rei was lucky, duties would keep Mamoru from the table. If not, she would quite happily flip him off and state her mind anyway. In fact, Rei realized that the thought of it was quite pleasing.
"Usagi," She called out, not bothering to knock at the double doors before entering because neither of them cared much for procedure when they were alone.

"Yes, I know this is a sensitive matter..." Usagi pressed "mute," cradling the phone to her ear and listening to the man jabber at her. She took the few moments while he ran his mouth to cram hers full of food, swallowing quickly and then taking the mute button off. "...Of course you have my full support. I'm behind these operations 100%. This is absolutely critical to our national security..." On went the mute button as she washed the food down with water. Unless she was at a state dinner, there was rarely time to ever actually enjoy her meals anymore. She would always have to eat while doing something else. It was very annoying. Food didn't taste the same way if you had to listen to your Deputy Director of Operations rattle off about Abu Sayyaf camps in Sumatra. "I'll pull up the budget files now; this should be in the memo..." She was keying the file number into the small netbook besides her when the double doors flew open.
Usagi was quite surprised to see Rei. It seemed like seeing the senshi sometimes was more of an exception than the rule. But one look at the Priestess, and Usagi knew this was not a pleasure call.
"Qiang, I'm going to have to call you back... You'll get your funding, don't worry. Uh-huh. Goodbye." Usagi put the phone down, quickly grabbing the linen napkin and wiping her mouth.
"You always manage to find me when I'm pigging out on something," she teased, though felt a little bit nervous. "Rei-chan, what's going on... Is everything alright?" Rei had been in such an odd mood that other night at the meeting, that Usagi wasn't entirely convinced that this wouldn't be a belated lecture about her disappearance. "Come on in... You caught me at a good time."

Rei closed the doors behind her, listening as Usagi finished her phone call. She winced a little at the woman cutting it short on her account, but did not object to it. Though she'd moved to take a seat uninvited, the woman paused, turned and returned to the doors to lock them. It would be best if anyone who wished to intrude on this would be forced to knock. That done, the woman once again moved for a seat and forced herself to smile at her friend.
It was sad, her inner-self reflected, that she had to force herself to smile, but the problem with her emotions had nothing to do with Usagi. Rei fleetingly considered that she might want to clarify that for the other woman, but the thought was lost beneath the rest of the hubbub.
"No, not precicely." Rei cut to the chase as she always did, leaning her elbows upon the table in the manner that one does when they feel their news is urgent and dire--which a lot of people do about everything, but in this case was actually somewhat true--and caught Usagi's gaze with her own. She wanted to know that she had Usagi's attention and that the food wasn't going to get between the Queen and her train of thought. "There is something going on, and has been for awhile it seems, that I've become aware of which I feel has possible... repercussions and dangers attatched to it."
Rei's jaw twitched faintly as she struggled to stay impassive in this. As angry as she was at Mamoru, it wouldn't do to go insulting the blockhead out of hand--at least not until Usagi was liable to agree with her about it. Insulting Mamoru openly and without obvious reason was never the way to begin any conversation with Usagi... and, in fact, was only likely to make her case seem childish and silly. "The day you chose to sneak off into the city a man came to my temple seeking help for trouble dreams and visions. He seemed strangely familiar to me, though I could not place him, and his story was intriguing. Unfortunately, this meeting was interrupted by the news of your escape, and so I could not stay to question him about his problem or past.
"He followed me to your quarters, I don't know why, and he was sneaky enough not to be caught in doing it. He made a mistake, however, after hearing a good deal of our conversation, and was caught. Lucien and Setsuna took him for questioning, but he was released--I thought that this might have been the end of it, but upon discussing it with Makoto, I found that we both had... nearly the same reaction to the sight of him. Hers was a good deal stronger."
Suddenly, Rei found her mouth going dry as she realized the part which was coming up. Rei interrupted herself by reaching forward for a pitcher of water an an extra glass--intended to be Mamoru's, no doubt--nearby. She poured it for herself and took a sip, giving Usagi a moment to interject her thoughts.

The locking of the doors did not go unnoticed by the young Queen, who's mood turned grave. It was even worse when Rei turned and gave her that smile. That small, sad, you're-not-going-to-like-this smile. It felt as if a rock had been dropped into her stomach.
Usagi stood up, pulling her chair closer to Rei and sitting down, interlacing her fingers and listening attentively. All thoughts of food and Sumatra were entirely forgotten. When Rei began to speak about about dangers and repercussions, she nodded to show she was giving the senshi her undivided attention. "Please continue."
She couldn't help but wince when Rei mentioned her disappearance, afraid this really would culminate in her getting lectured or blamed for something. That moment passed as Rei continued with her story, bringing Makoto into it, talking about this strange man.
As Rei went for the second glass, she interrupted. "Was his name Khalid ibn Maleec? I met Maleec-san earlier today... I got the strangest feeling from him, it was so odd, the most intense déja vu in the world... Could it possibly be the same man?" Yet, that didn't seem right. "I'm sorry, I should let you tell the story, you'll let me know who he is, no doubt." Yet, if it was someone who was giving people odd feelings, Usagi could find no candidate better than Khalid. "Luna got weird vibes from him too. Sorry... Go on, go on..." she waved her hand, settling in to listen. Maybe Rei would have some answers about all of it.

Rei frowned deeply into her water glass as Usagi guessed at a name which she didn't know. The two other possibilities sprung to mind and Rei searched her memory, pulling up the images of the two "missing" shittennou--at least, were her guess about Nathanial correct. Instead of continuing immediately, she demanded, "Tall, with white hair and dark skin, or somewhat average with long blond hair?"

"Yes!" Usagi exclaimed breathlessly, making a little jump in her chair. "You nailed it. That's him. The first time I saw him-- oh, Rei-chan, it was so weird! I thought I was back on the Moon! Tall, white-ish hair, darker skin, yup, he's a dead ringer for what you just said. Oh, I'm so glad there's an explanation for this, it's been driving me crazy all day long," Usagi said thoughtfully, leaning back in her chair. "So, hit me. I gotta know what's going on here."

Rather than be happy about it, Rei shook her head, "That wasn't the man from the other day. But I think I know who this one is..."
Instead of leaping to the end, she took a deep breath to calm herself, "After we were finally told where you were--" There was a pause, and Rei eyed her Queen as the urge to go into her feelings upon the subject sprang to the surface. After a moment, the Priestess caught herself, told herself "later," and continued on her first strain of thought, "I meant to join the interrogation of the man--whose name I later found out to be Nathaniel, for reference."
She paused to sip her water again, mouth once more dry, "I headed toward my shrine for... something or other, first, I can't remember what now and instead bumped into another man, with the same sort of strange feeling. Except this was... far, far stronger than what I had felt towards Nathaniel. Hiroki is a new tech guy at the palace. There was a scene, some rumors were started..."
Rei shook her head. No, she did not need to go into that now. "A few days passed, and Hiroshi came looking for me at the temple. Well, not... me, precisely--he wanted the head Priest and didn't realize that I hold the position. That was when an... event occurred."
Once more pausing in her speech, Rei searched her thoughts for how to explain this. She also took the moment to fight the anger still rolling inside of her like a tempest. Her eyes closed and she leaned on elbow again onto the table top, pressing the sweating water glass against one temple. "He had come to complain of hallucinations since he'd met me. Problems sleeping, strange thoughts... And something set him off while he was there. He... changed.
"His true name is Jadeite."

Usagi's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "It's not him? But then, how...?" She decided to shut her mouth, figured Rei would get to that. She was sure she was probably trying the Priestess's patience already-- Usagi was quite adept at doing that by her interruptions and impatience.
"Please don't beat a dead horse," she cut in as Rei eyed her when mentioning the disappearance again. "It was wrong of me, I know it was, I'm sorry I did it, I won't do it again, and I've gotten hell for it, much of which I've given to myself. So please, there's nothing you could tell me what hasn't already been said. Please."
Luckily, Rei seemed to be moving on. Usagi held onto that name, Nathaniel, and then Hiroki. There were lots of bits and pieces missing. "Rei, you're holding somethings back from me, I can tell," Usagi told her, searching her friend's eyes. Maybe she should do a trade-- Rei could lecture her if she got the extra details. Because on something this important, Usagi was pretty sure she'd need as much detail as she could wring out of Rei.
All of her thoughts scattered into oblivion at that one word. Usagi sat stone still, only her hand flying up to her chest, grasping at the silk fabric of her shirt where her henshin brooch would have once been. Just the sound of that word drew fear to the surface, made her instinctively want to transform.
Usagi just stared at Rei for a moment. "Hiroki... is Jadeite? Kami-sama!" She forced her hand to lower, the realization crashing over her in increasingly large waves. "That means that Nathaniel and Khalid must be shitennou too, if we're getting the same feelings from them. And there must be one more out there, whom we haven't met yet... Kami-sama," she repeated again, her throat dry. "Rei... We have to tell Mamo-chan! Is... is Jadeite hostile like before?"
As if terrorists and uprisings and human enemies weren't enough, now she had to deal with shitennou coming back from the dead! "Shimatta!" Usagi swore, standing up to pace.

Rei ignored Usagi's comments about the "dead horse." She was too tired to go into it and felt further a little annoyance at the implication that she was going to lecture the girl over it. In fact, that annoyance almost caused her to snap something unkind, but Rei bit her tongue. Losing her temper at Usagi wasn't going to help any matters.
Instead she went on to freeze a little when Usagi accused her of withholding information. The woman was right, of course, but ti was information that Rei felt it was her right to withhold. Something nagged at the back of her mind about hypocrisy, but she ignored it... for now. Instead, she watched as realization dawned upon her friend and didn't stop Usagi from pacing--so long as the woman didn't try to leave yet.
"Hiroki is Jadeite," she reiterated to confirm it, then went on, "Nathaniel, I believe, is Nephrite. After the scene in the shrine, I went into the city to track him down and make certain that I can keep him under observation--I have already agreed to take him under my tutelage at the shrine and to guide him towards breaking a... mental barrier in his mind that I believe seals off his memories of the Shittenou. If my guess on that is correct, I would venture to believe that you've already met Kunzite--based upon appearance alone, since they seem to not have ventured far from the originals in that end."
Rei sucked in a breath, then raised one hand to catch Usagi's arm gently when the woman paced past her, "Usagi, sit down. There's more."

"Kunzite. Yes, I suppose that makes sense," Usagi said to herself, staring out over the city lights outside the large window. "Khalid is a VP of an oil company. I unofficially granted him an energy contract today. The company has a good reputation, and provided the security process goes smoothly, we'll be in business." She turned, pacing back towards Rei. "This is a good thing. I'll be in a position to keep a careful eye on him, as well." They would want to identify all of the shitennou, make sure they could keep them under careful guard... "The way you're talking, I assume that in their new forms, they don't have memories of who they were... Maybe we should consider keeping it that way."
Usagi glanced down at Rei's grasp on her arm, sucking in a deep breath and sitting down. "I'm sorry, Rei-chan... I'm not trying to treat you like a member of my staff," she said apologetically. Usagi had gotten too used to reacting to crises now, that it all came out brisk after the initial shock, a long way away from the wailing and pouting she used to sink into whenever bad news would confront her.
"Please... go on..." she urged, but her voice shook a little bit. They needed to tell Mamoru as quickly as possible... Shouldn't they be listening to this together?

"Frankly, Usagi, I prefer this side of you," Rei replied after a moment of hesitation and caught her friend's eyes. They'd spent a lot of time fighting in their youth over Usagi's immaturity... but there didn't seem to be quite so large a gap between them anymore. "This is serious and it should be discussed as such, especially in light of a few other details."
Rei shook her head, and returned to the point, "They do not seem to have memories in their 'new' forms, no, until those barriers are broken. We have one, now, who does remember entirely who and what he is--unfortunately those memories contain certain... events which I personally do not have any recollection of. You may not, and nor have the rest of the girls given any indication of such, either."
Rei looked up at her friend again and kept the hand on Usagi's arm. "Mamoru already knows about this."
After she gave her friend a moment to digest that, Rei explained, "When Jadeite awoke, I nearly fought him myself--except that he wasn't hostile. In fact, he seemed... overjoyed to see me." The Priestess frowned, for it was not a pleasant memory in the least. Something in her eyes seemed to darken, then, and a curious tone entered her voice. "He claimed to be... well. He claimed that the Shittenou were loyal to Endymion, and not Beryl; that Endymion would vouch for him if needed. I called Mamoru, but did not wish to disturb anyone else's work.
"When Mamoru arrived, he confirmed Jadeite's story and told me that he has been, for all these years, keeping the Shittennou's souls alive and with him in the form of gems. Apparently they are aware enough to act as his advisers."

Usagi swallowed and nodded to Rei, giving her a hesitant smile in return. She refused to let on, but the comment actually hurt her. Rei-chan would really like me to treat her like one of my staff? Not for the first time, Usagi wondered if Rei and herself would even have been friends if it were not for their pasts and future destinies. Does she not want me to share my true feelings with her? I guess she wants her Queen more than a friend...? It just stung, after the uncertainty of the past few weeks. Ami had decided to take on a greater role, and she had asked Minako for help, but was waiting for the rest to decide how much they wanted to be apart of this-- wanted them to be happy. Maybe some, like Rei, really didn't want to stay friends, the way they used to be. Well, she could do it, couldn't she? She did it for everyone else, every day... Be their queen, and not Usagi.
"Maybe memories of our past lives," Usagi murmured in response, taking a sip of her own water and stuffing her fear and confusion inside. But then, the words tumbled out, more shocks, but one that Usagi could not keep internal. It felt as if the ground had risen up to smack her. She took a jolting, gasping breath, the glass, slick with beads of moisture, slide through her shaking fingers and shattered, gouging the polished wood of the table.
"Mamo-chan... knew?!" No. That was her first reaction. They must be talking about two different Mamoru's-- the Mamoru who had fought by her side, had braved death for her sake, would not hide the existence of their former enemies and take their advise for all these long years, without breathing a word of it to her. While everyday smiling at her and going through life like there were no secrets between them.
Well, maybe it was true. Maybe you never really knew people fully. Usagi had had her share of betrayals since becoming queen. A former aide who wrote a scathing 'memoir' and sold it for millions. Her former college roommate that sold a private photo to the tabloids. There were many knives in her back to choose from, but the last person she expected it from would be her fiancé.
Her fear was running hot instead of cold, boiling into unadulterated wrath. She felt her forehead heating up, and light flashed from her insignia. She could not contain the fury storming within her. Usagi had never felt this angry before, she was sure of it.
She resumed pacing, barking out a harsh laugh. "You know... If I had heard about one of my staff, or one of my ministers, keeping the existence of our enemies secret, taking advice from them, saying that they weren't really loyal to evil, giving some other cocked up excuse... You know what I would call it? Do you know?! Treason. That's what I would call it."

Rei watched the anger transform her friend without a word, lavender eyes cold and distant as Usagi reacted... exactly how Rei had reacted, really. To say that she and Usagi had never really understood one another would be accurate, but in this moment Rei thought she understood completely. Yet rather than feel elated at having someone to share her anger with, Rei suddenly felt... tired. Angry, oh yes, but also very, deeply tired. That incessant, often smart-mouthed voice at the back of her head informed her that she'd been waiting a long time for Usagi to grow up.
And that same part of her was proud of the woman for doing so... while the rest of her was just so terribly sad that it had taken away the innocence that had once fueled the Queen.
Rei nodded with the talk of treason. "He believes that they are reformed; that their... betrayal to Beryl was not as it seems. At least, that is what I gathered before I threw them both out of my shrine."
The Priestess got to her feet and went to a side table to find a cloth. After acquiring the item, she bent by the table to begin gathering up the shards of glass with it, before Usagi cut herself stepping on it, or managed to trip over a chair and land on it. It was inevitable that the woman would do so--or, at least, the Usagi that Rei knew would have done just that. "To go a little off track, but I assure you that it is related, Usagi... There is something I have to know about Mamoru. Or, rather, something that I must tell you."
Rei looked up at her fuming friend, "I will not follow Endymion as my king. He may be my equal. He might be my work partner. But I cannot have him lording his position over me and expecting me to 'fall in line' with his orders simply because he gives them. You are our leader, not him, and I refuse to follow him as your second."

"You know I don't care if they're all Nobel Laureates," Usagi spat coldly. "He should have told us. He should have told me. We deserve to know! This is... I can't believe this is happening. What next? He'll tell me he does lunch with Wiseman on Thursdays, and Saturday nights he gets together with Kaolinite to watch Revenge of the Sith." She gave a grim smile. "You threw them out of the shrine? I suppose they should be grateful you didn't do much more than that." And Usagi meant every word.
She glanced over as Rei began to pick up the pieces of glass, waving her hand. "Rei-chan, you don't have to do that, someone else can clean it up... Just my clumsiness coming back to haunt me, I guess," Usagi said feebly, though she knew it was the shock that did it to her. She supposed it was lucky she had broken that glass to begin with, because she had a strong urge to throw something right now.
Usagi quieted down enough to listen when Rei talked about Mamoru, slowly nodding. "Rei-chan, I hardly expect you all to follow me," she said softly. "I certainly won't make you do so with Mamoru. You know..." Usagi took a seat again, unable to decide whether or not to feel angry standing up or sitting. "...I've been under a lot of legal pressure to determine in what capacity Mamoru will be King after the wedding. I am not Queen because I was the princess of the Silver Millennium; but because this world needed a leader from the fall of Old Earth and I was the one they wanted." Even though she had resented taking the crown. "So our birthrights really don't matter all that much, beyond the powers they gave us to defend this planet. Therefore, I've been told... That I need to remain Queen regnant after the marriage. There's always something more pressing so I haven't dealt with it, and frankly I wasn't looking forward to sitting down with him and discussing authority and who has the final say... I figured I'd deal with it later... But no time like the present, eh?" She just shook her head, smiling sadly. "Rei, I won't hand the crown to someone I can't trust, who commits what I would consider from others to be treason. I can't, as Tsukino Usagi, marry a man whom I don't know and whom I can't trust. Rei-chan-- you don't answer to Mamoru. Not as a senshi of the Silver Millenium, and not a senshi of New Earth, and not as Hino Rei. Don't ever worry about me forcing that on you."

The glass gathered, Rei deposited the entire thing on an unused plate (again, Mamoru's) and inspected her hands to make certain she'd done herself no damage. Usagi's Star Wars reference passed with a rude snort of agreement from her company, and Rei found herself nodding as well to Usagi's admittance. Though there was a strange twist in her gut towards Usagi's beliefs--for she knew just how long Usagi had loved this man and wanted him with her--the colder, logical side of her knew it was for the best that she'd told her friend this.
Rei retook her seat beside Usagi and reached forward to put one hand over the other woman's, squeezing her fingers gently. "I promised my loyalty to you in this life, the last, and in this new world that we've defined. I won't waver in that promise... but I must agree with your advisors that you need to remain Queen regent. Even before this I wasn't comfortable with Endymion being your equal in power, and after this I most certainly am not."
Rei remembered the e-mail she'd gotten from Ami the last day she'd bothered to check the silly device, and frowned, "I know... I know that this life is hard on you. It is for all of us. No matter that we knew it was coming, I don't think that any of us were prepared for just what it meant and how many limitations came with this choice."
After a moment of thought, her eyes watching first their hands and then the face of her longest friend, Rei added, "Things have been strained between all of lately. A result of growing up, of our duties becoming too much. I don't know why you chose to believe that you couldn't come to me with your worries, but I'm sorry that you felt the need to run instead. You are our leader, and I follow you, and don't ever worry about asking me to do your bidding."
The priestess couldn't help a faint, harsh laugh, "It isn't as if I won't tell you how I feel about something--if I disagree with an order, I disagree with it to your face."
