Ami had been having a rough day. She usually loved her work, except when she lost a patient, but today she just wanted the day to be over, to go home and be with her sisters. She wasn't sure if it was Usagi's stunt that had woken her up or Minako coming home and not getting to see her or just how nice it had been to be with Makoto and Rei that morning or the way Makoto had checked up on her or even the rumor. All she knew was that she wanted to be home, with her sisters, rather than here at the hospital.

She'd managed to keep it from affecting her work thus far, but it was beginning to wear on her.

Now she was having to give bad news to parents. She took a deep breath and rubbed at her forehead trying to remember why she'd chosen Pediatrics. A vision of Small Lady presented itself and she grinned, remembering. "I can do this... professional and reassuring but with some compassion learned from Usagi."

She slipped out to the waiting area and smiled to the parents. As the couple rose, Ami noticed that the mother was holding one of those ridiculous gossip magazines. Well, she had to admit that sitting in a waiting room was both boring and nerve wracking, so she would not begrudge the woman any distraction.

"Mr. and Mrs. Kuroda. We've got the results. Your daughter has bacterial meningitis. Fortunately, you brought her in in the very early stages. We've started her on an antibiotic, and the prognosis is good. However, we'll need to watch her very carefully as there can be some lasting complications." She did not grimace at herself, but realized how cold she sounded.

As the mother dropped the gossip rag and turned to her husband for comfort, Ami happened to look down and saw it. The cover had her blinking and blushing deeply.

The father had to ask his question a second time before Ami managed to hear him. "Roughly eighty-seven to ninety percent of patients survive. And you brought her in in the very early stages. I believe that she will make it."

She offered him some literature. "I realize that this is a lot to take in right now. Here is some literature that explains bacterial meningitis. If you have any questions, you have number. We'll take good care of her."

They both nodded, and when Ami was sure that they had no more questions for her immediately, she took her leave, making a beeline to the staff lounge.
